Fraport: Fewer passengers due to omicron propagation

Advertising

Frankfurt Airport counted around 2,1 million passengers last month. An increase of 211,3 percent compared to the same period last year, when demand was very weak due to tightened travel restrictions.

Although the dynamic spread of the Omikron variant has slowed the recovery in demand, the elimination of individual travel restrictions has stimulated tourist traffic at the Frankfurt location, according to the airport operator. Compared to February 2019, the number of passengers in Frankfurt was just under half of the level at the time.

The cargo volume recorded a decline of 8,8 percent to 164.769 tons in February. According to Fraport, the reason for this was the early start of the Chinese New Year. The number of flight movements, on the other hand, rose by 100,8 percent to 22.328 take-offs and landings. At almost 1,5 million tons, the total maximum take-off weight increased by 53,0 percent (compared to February 2021 in each case). Passenger numbers also developed positively again at the international Group and affiliated airports. With the exception of Xi'an in China, all locations achieved significant growth of over 100 percent in some cases compared to the greatly reduced air traffic in February 2021.
