The tower at Friedrichshafen Airport, which dates back to the 1950s, is to be used for other purposes. A solution is currently being worked on intensively, with a so-called “remote tower” concept emerging.

A corresponding feasibility study has now been commissioned. The current control tower is getting old and needs modernization or a contemporary replacement. Together with the commissioned engineering and consulting firm Airsight, various concepts for a cost-efficient, future-oriented and sustainable solution will be examined by February 2023. The focus is on a so-called "remote tower". The outside view from the cockpit is replaced by a high-resolution camera screen system, which transmits the image from the airport to the controller's workstation in real time. The air traffic controllers would then no longer sit in the tower, but would have their workplace in a separate control room.

The possibility of creating a remote tower center in Friedrichshafen, from which other airports can also be controlled, is also being examined. In Germany, for example, Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) already controls Saarbrücken and Erfurt airports from a remote tower center in Leipzig, and Dresden is to follow soon.
