A few years ago, the former military area of ​​Graz Airport was closed. So far, the subsequent use was still completely open. The airport has now applied for part of the area of ​​the former Nittner air base to be included in the civilian airfield.

Even if there is an existing taxiway between the former military area and Graz-Thalerhof Airport, the former Nittner Air Base is not formally a civilian airport. In concrete terms, this means that the properties and infrastructure there are currently not allowed to be used for flying at all.

This is exactly what Graz Airport wants to change and has submitted a formal application to the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology for the existing civil airport permit to be changed so that part of the former military area is included. In concrete terms, this means that if the decision is positive, the former military infrastructure can then be used for civil purposes, for example by general aviation.

Although military aviation once existed in this area, the Department of Transportation must first give the go-ahead for civilian use. Specifically, the area of ​​Graz airport is to be expanded in such a way that the former Nittner air base is also included in the civil airport permit. This is a bureaucratic effort, because according to the mandatory publication in the Official Gazette of the Wiener Zeitung, it is a so-called large-scale procedure.

“It is intended to include a 7.255 square meter area of ​​the former Graz Thalerhof military airfield (Nittner air base) in the airport area. The planned expansion of the civil airport is located on plots 35/2, 35/4, 35/5 and 103/3 in the cadastral municipality of 63286 Thalerhof. A 5.655 square meter apron and a 1.600 square meter hangar are to be built on the expansion site. A large part of the existing infrastructure (sealed areas, existing runway, sliding gate, etc.) is to be used for this,” says the public announcement, which for legal reasons had to be published in the Official Gazette of the Wiener Zeitung.

The further procedure is as follows: Since December 7, 2022 and up to and including January 20, 2023, any interested person can go to the BMK, the city hall of Graz and the municipal offices of Kalsdorf, Feldkirchen, Fernitz-Mellach, Gössendorf, Hausmannstätten and many others Neighboring communities can inspect the documents.
