Highlight of fine cuisine in the heart of Klosterneuburg: “Das Kritz” in the Amtshaus

If you want to surprise your partner with an exceptional restaurant, you should take him or her to “Das Kritz”. This very small restaurant with around 30 seats is located in an exceptional setting in an office building. It is new, very elegant and freshly decorated. The restaurant has a lot of natural light thanks to a large number of windows.

The days off are Monday to Tuesday. From Wednesday it is open to guests from 11:30 a.m. to 22 p.m. (kitchen open until 00 p.m.). Available on Sunday from 21:11 a.m. to 30 p.m. (kitchen open until 17 p.m.). This gourmet ambience is characterized by its motto: "For us, enjoyment comes first: we rely on fresh ingredients, homemade Austrian cuisine and a warm atmosphere." I can personally confirm this, because if you are looking for fresh cuisine with a small menu, this is the right place. The restaurateurs offer freshly tapped beer, which is rather unusual for a small restaurant. Furthermore, the feeling of being invited to a friend's house is conveyed, simply an atmosphere like at home.

It is also worth mentioning that the operators allow guests to see their partners and supplier list. For example, they order vegetables from Weingut Windisch, Transgourmet and Rungis Express. The meat is supplied by Wiesbauer and Thorhof Fisch & Wild. They also get their fish from Thorhof Fisch & Wild and Rungis Express. The "Kritz" works with seven different wineries: Niki Windisch, Weissinger, Edwin Weber, Kolkmann, K + K Kirnbauer, Krutzler, Zöhrer, Alphart, Thomas Schwarz. Bread and pastries are supplied by N11 Patisserie.

Menu

If you like Austrian cuisine, this is the place for you. The Kritz has a general and a seasonal menu. The main menu consists of five starters - from beef tartare, organic pasture-fed beef with a quail egg, a beef broth, smoked trout, vitello tonnato, a pink veal fillet with tuna and limoncello and for vegetarians, an eggplant tartare. The seasonal menu, on the other hand, only offers three starters: a beef tartare with pumpkin and truffle, a pumpkin cream soup and a baked sheep's cheese. The in-between dishes are very unusual, because they offer, for example, wild boar sausages and mini greaves dumplings. In the seasonal menu, the restaurant offers snails and veal stew with root vegetables and napkin dumplings. The main course variation has six dishes, from schnitzel, beef goulash, beef cheeks, paprika chicken, lake trout and cheese dumplings,

The seasonal menu, on the other hand, has only two main courses, which currently include pumpkin gnocchi with goat's cheese and chervil, as well as pink duck breast with cranberry croquettes, pumpkin and Jerusalem artichoke, and heirloom potatoes. There are two desserts available: a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream and berries, and a cheese variation with bread and fig mustard. In the seasonal menu, the restaurateurs offer a chestnut panna cotta with speculaas and berries. The Kritz also offers a selection of different, freshly prepared desserts in its cake display case every day.

My tasting and recommendations

My first choice was the starter of beef tartare with quail egg and sourdough bread, as well as the snails as a snack, and for the main course I ordered the pink duck breast. The beef tartare was beautifully presented. The beef was juicy, fresh and refined in a classic preparation with a vinegar vinaigrette. The quail egg was just right, very juicy and still slightly runny. The snails were served on a delicious, warm pumpkin mirror with herb butter and a Belper Knolle. This dish was seasoned with fresh pepper and parmesan. The chef probably meant well by me and sprinkled a little more pepper than was necessary over the dish. Personally, I would have preferred less pepper, but a pinch of lemon juice.

The highlight of my culinary journey, however, was the pink duck breast. This was served with lovely little cranberry croquettes, a delicious pumpkin glaze and Jerusalem artichokes. The sauce was too strong for me personally, it didn't suit this very elegant dish in my opinion. It was just too strong for my taste. But tastes differ, so try it yourself and leave me a comment. The duck was perfectly cooked, very tender and juicy.

Conclusion: Clear recommendation

I would definitely visit this small, idyllic restaurant again because the cozy atmosphere and the small number of visitors are really pleasant. The tables are far enough apart so that no one feels disturbed. On my next visit I will try the desserts.

What I also find very appealing is that they offer two small dishes for those who are a little hungry. Namely a hearty beef broth with fritters for 4 euros and a ham and cheese toast for 5 euros. Children can choose between schnitzel, fish fingers and egg dumplings with a green salad. The Kritz is a small but fine culinary journey hidden in the shell of a government building. The meals for children are between 4-12 euros and for adults between 10-16 euros for starters, for snacks from 8-11 euros, for main courses from 14-24 euros and for desserts from 7-9 euros.
