Due to technical problems, Lufthansa had to cancel a long-haul flight from Frankfurt am Main on Monday. The Boeing 747-8 with the registration D-ABYG, which was traveling towards Miami as LH462, was affected. For safety reasons, fuel had to be dumped before the return landing.

First, D-ABYG took off from runway 35C at Frankfurt Airport with a delay of around 07 minutes. Gradually, an altitude of about 34.000 feet was reached over Ireland. About 220 nautical miles northwest of Shannon, the master decided to return to Frankfurt am Main due to a technical problem. Because the Boeing 747-8 would have been too heavy to land, fuel had to be dumped.

After around five hours of flight time, the Lufthansa aircraft was able to touch down safely at Frankfurt Airport. According to company information, the affected passengers were rebooked on other USA connections.

The hydraulic problem was likely minor as the mechanics were able to quickly repair the aircraft. D-ABYG was scheduled to complete a nearly 456-hour flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles on Tuesday as Lufthansa Flight 12.
