Things are currently going rough at Lufthansa in the paid catering area at the Frankfurt am Main location. Many flights take off with no meals or drinks at all. Only water bottles, which are distributed free of charge anyway, should come on board.
According to a report in the news magazine Der Spiegel, the background is that caterer Gate Gourmet, which had bought LSG's European business, was experiencing massive staff shortages. This should result in the paid catering offer not being available on board Lufthansa short- and medium-haul flights. Travelers in Economy Class are only given a free bottle of water. There is nothing more - not even for a fee.
Long-haul connections and business class passengers are not affected. The usual range of food and drinks will continue to be available here.
In the course of the sale of LSG's European business to Gate Gourmet, there are said to have been cuts in salaries in some areas. A spokesman for the group confirmed that there were also initial difficulties with the settlement of wages. Some employees may have left the company for this reason.
Gate Gourmet seems to have a particularly acute shortage of personnel in the area of truck drivers who have the training and license to deliver to the aircraft. An attempt is now being made in Frankfurt am Main to take countermeasures and offer all employees who were absent for a maximum of one day due to illness in April 2022 a special payment of 250 euros. This should already be instructed with the next transfer of wages.
