The airline Brussels Airlines had to temporarily suspend its flights between Brussels and Monrovia. The background is that the technical equipment of the airport should not correspond to the international standard.
According to local media reports, the primary concern is that the approach and landing systems should neither correspond to the operating procedures of Brussels Airlines nor the ICAO standard. The airport's equipment is damaged or currently not operational. The ICAO asked Liberia to make it operational again within three months. This also includes Monrovia's ILS system.
That deadline has now passed, but it's not much. Brussels Airlines can now no longer fly to Monrovia for safety reasons, but also in accordance with the Belgian legislation to which it is subject, the company told local media. After that everything went very quickly.
Just a day after Brussels Airlines announced that it had to take the airport off the network, the carrier said: "On Friday 16 September, Brussels Airlines received official confirmation from the local authorities that the necessary technical and operational operating conditions are met. The Belgian airline will therefore resume operations between Brussels effective immediately, with a next scheduled flight on Sunday 18 September”.
