With the start of the 2025 summer flight schedule on March 30, 2025, the next step in the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group was completed. At the German hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, all ITA Airways flights will be handled in the Lufthansa Group terminals. This move will enable passengers to benefit from shorter transfer times and improved connections.
In Frankfurt, ITA Airways is moving from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, which is used by the Lufthansa Group. This means that the Italian airline's flights will depart from Gate Areas A and B, significantly shortening travel times for passengers. In addition, the proximity to the Deutsche Bahn long-distance train station with ICE connections will enable convenient onward travel.
At Munich Airport, ITA Airways is moving from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, which is jointly operated by Lufthansa and Munich Airport, and to the associated satellite.
At the Lufthansa Group's other hubs, including Brussels, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich, all of the Group's airlines are already located under one roof. This simplifies the transfer process and improves the travel experience for customers. For example, Zurich Airport already had a seamless connection between Swiss and ITA Airways.
Expanded codeshare flights and harmonized route networks
With the new summer flight schedule, ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group airlines are also launching joint codeshare flights. The route networks are now coordinated, allowing passengers to combine flights in a single booking. Over 100 new codeshare connections within Europe are available, offering travelers expanded flight options. Lufthansa Group guests can reach Italian airports such as Alghero, Lampedusa, Pantelleria, and Reggio Calabria via codeshare with ITA Airways. Conversely, ITA Airways provides access to numerous destinations within the Lufthansa Group network. Over 50.000 of these combination tickets were already sold in the first three weeks.
Mutual lounge use and extended frequent flyer programs
From March 30, 2025, ITA Airways passengers will be able to use the approximately 130 lounges of the Lufthansa Group and its partners. ITA Airways lounges will also be open to Lufthansa Group passengers. Frequent flyers have already benefited from expanded options since February 3, 2025: Members of the Miles & More program can collect and redeem miles and points for their frequent flyer status on all flights operated by ITA Airways. Conversely, members of the ITA Airways Volare program can use their points with Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines.
Voices on integration
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, emphasizes the benefits of the integration: "This move is an important milestone in the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group. Thanks to shorter routes, our customers will be able to transfer faster and more conveniently and enjoy greater comfort throughout their journey. This also includes shared lounge use. ITA Airways guests will experience the enormous advantages of the Lufthansa Group, with all its premium airlines and a worldwide route network, thanks to this connection. Guests will also have more direct access to numerous destinations in the Italian market. This means that in just two months, we have succeeded in offering our guests a seamless premium travel experience."
Financial aspects and future developments
The Lufthansa Group acquired a 2025 percent stake in ITA Airways for €41 million in January 325. The Group's long-term goal is a gradual, full takeover by 2033, with a total investment of €829 million. Carsten Spohr, CEO of the Lufthansa Group, expects the integration of ITA Airways to increase Group profit by several hundred million euros in the coming years. ITA Airways also plans to join the Star Alliance in 2026, which will further deepen cooperation within the airline alliance.
