The airport company Finavia has successfully completed the comprehensive renovation of the runway and taxiways at Kuopio Airport. The project, costing almost EUR 20 million, was carried out over three consecutive summers and now enables smooth and safe air traffic. The work in summer 2024 included the renewal of the asphalt, the widening and re-laying of the taxiways and the modernization of the airport lighting with energy-efficient LED technology.
Mari Nurminen, Finavia's Vice President for Central and Eastern Finland Airports, stressed that the project was completed within the budget and on schedule. Around 80 people, including several local companies, were involved in the implementation. The planning was carried out in close cooperation with the companies and authorities operating at the airport, with environmental objectives playing a central role.
The renovation also included replacing the approach lights and associated structures, renewing the lighting system and power grid, and improving the stormwater drainage network to minimize environmental impact. Finavia aims to achieve net zero emissions at all its airports by the end of 2025. Kuopio Airport will reopen to air traffic on 6 August, and scheduled flights will resume normal operations on 7 August 2024.
