Leipzig: Antonov An-124 completed emergency landing with defective landing gear

An Antonov An-124 cargo plane lost a wheel earlier this week shortly after takeoff from Rzeszów, Poland, but it got stuck in the landing gear assembly. As a result, it could no longer be retracted.

The Antonov Airlines cockpit crew noticed the problem immediately and initially circled over the take-off area. An emergency landing in Breslau was then considered. This project was then rejected, however, because the originally planned airport, Leipzig/Halle, landed. The transport aircraft was at a maximum altitude of 12.000 feet during the entire flight.

First, the captain announced an emergency landing in Wrocław. The corresponding approach was already being prepared and the Wroclaw airport fire brigade was already on standby as a precaution. However, the pilot then rejected the plan and decided to make the emergency landing at the actual destination of Leipzig/Halle. The decision may also be related to the fact that Antonov Airlines uses this airport as a temporary home base because of the war in Ukraine and that technicians and spare parts are kept at this airport.

According to eyewitnesses, the first attempt to land in Leipzig was unsuccessful. Shortly before touchdown, the captain decided on a go-around maneuver. On the second attempt, the large transport aircraft touched down safely. Leipzig/Halle also had the fire brigade ready as a precaution, but fortunately they were not needed. The affected aircraft is to be repaired on site and put back into cargo service shortly.
