Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A team of researchers at TU Graz has developed a system for real-time assessment of lightning risk in order to reduce weather-related operational interruptions, so-called shutdowns, at Graz Airport.

Using six field mills, lightning location data and machine learning, the system was able to predict lightning in advance in 75 percent of cases. It aims to increase safety and make operations more efficient. The methods could also be applied in other areas with high thunderstorm exposure.
