Munich Airport and Lufthansa want to expand the existing partnership and further develop the airport into an inter-modular transport hub. A corresponding declaration of intent was signed on Wednesday.

With the Letter of Intent (LOI), both companies have committed to a joint sustainability strategy, to the expansion of Munich as an intermodal transport hub, to the needs-based expansion of the terminal infrastructure and to the promotion of digitization and innovations in operations. This includes projects such as smart passenger and automated handling processes to make the travel experience of passengers even more pleasant and efficient.

"We went through the difficult time of the corona pandemic together with Lufthansa and will return to our old strength together. With the common goals of sustainability, innovation, digitization and the consistent further development of the premium hub Munich, we will continue this strategic partnership successfully," said Munich Airport boss Jost Lammers.

An innovative hub requires an optimal landside connection. FMG and Lufthansa see an urgent need for action to connect Munich Airport to the long-distance/ICE network. This also includes the optimization of local and regional transport. This is the only way to make arrivals and departures to and from the airport more sustainable and increase the catchment area.

In order to be able to compete in the long term, both companies are driving forward the fulfillment of their sustainability goals, so that the entire Munich location will benefit from this. The commitment to the respective climate and sustainability goals is a central part of the LOI. FMG wants to operate the airport infrastructure CO₂-neutral by 2030. This includes, among other things, climate-efficient new buildings, the modernization of existing buildings and operating systems and the conversion of the vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.

“The partnership with Munich Airport can certainly be described as unique. Together we will continue to accept and master the challenges of air traffic in the future. Sustainability is one of the top issues. This also includes a better rail connection - not only to reach the airport quickly and conveniently, but also to be able to make an important contribution to climate protection," says Stefan Kreuzpaintner, CCO Lufthansa Airlines.
