The "indulgence trade" with so-called carbon compensation payments is not going well for most airlines. Extremely few passengers donate during the booking process or afterwards via an independent platform. Lufthansa is now trying to go a new way.

The crane now offers passengers the option of offsetting their carbon dioxide emissions in the form of a donation via the inflight entertainment system. With Lufthansa, the offer is available from Munich on short and medium-haul flights that have a WLAN Internet connection. On long-haul routes, both Mainline and Swiss are testing selected connections.

The feature will be displayed to guests in the onboard entertainment system. There you can use a slider to decide for yourself how you want to offset the CO2 emissions from your flight: either with sustainable aviation fuel made from biogenic residues, with high-quality climate protection projects from the non-profit organization myclimate, or with a combination of both options. Passengers can use the offer free of charge via the Internet on board on their mobile devices. In the new application, passengers can see directly how many passengers have already offset the CO2 emissions of their individual flight on that day and thus become part of a growing community.

It remains to be seen whether the “digital air-conditioning collection bag” on board will prove itself. It is very likely that this will also be the decisive criterion as to whether the feature will be rolled out across the group or not.
