The globally acclaimed musical Mamma Mia! is celebrating a special anniversary this year: 1999 years have passed since its premiere in London's West End in 25. To mark the occasion, the sensational feel-good musical will go on an extensive tour of Germany and Austria in November and December 2024. The musical, which was created by Judy Craymer and is based on the timeless hits of the Swedish pop group ABBA, will stop in Munich, Vienna, Stuttgart and Berlin before continuing its journey in Bremen and Frankfurt in January 2025.

Mamma Mia! is much more than just a musical - it is a cultural phenomenon. Since its premiere in London's West End in April 1999, the play has become one of the most successful stage productions in the world. With more than 65 million viewers in 50 productions and in 16 different languages, Mamma Mia! has delighted millions of people around the world. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that in 2011 the musical was the first of its kind to be performed in Mandarin in the People's Republic of China, underlining its international appeal.

The musical has proved a huge success not only in Europe but also in the United States. On Broadway, where Mamma Mia! ran for a record-breaking 14 years, it has become the eighth longest-running show in history, underscoring the enduring popularity and relevance of this musical that appeals to people of all ages.

A story full of heart and humor, carried by ABBA hits

The story of Mamma Mia! revolves around Sophie, a young woman about to get married and trying to find her biological father. She invites three men to the idyllic Greek island, one of whom she believes could be her father. The complications and humorous chaos that ensues are perfectly underscored by the unforgettable songs of ABBA. Hits like "Dancing Queen", "Super Trouper" and of course "Mamma Mia" fit seamlessly into the storyline and help to enhance the emotional depth and fun of the musical.

The music and lyrics were written by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, who have played a key role in the musical's global success. The screenplay by Catherine Johnson, the direction by Phyllida Lloyd and the choreography by Anthony Van Laast have also played a key role in making Mamma Mia! what it is today: a masterfully staged piece that offers a perfect balance between humor, heart and musical enjoyment.

Film adaptations: A success on the screen

In addition to its stage success, Mamma Mia! has also enjoyed great success in the cinema. The first film, produced by Judy Craymer and released in 2008, quickly became the most successful musical film of all time. The sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again followed in 2018, which also broke records and became the most successful live musical film sequel of all time. These film adaptations have helped to increase the musical's popularity even further and attract a new generation of fans.

The upcoming tour through Germany and Austria is a unique opportunity for fans to experience the musical live. Each city will only host for a short time, so demand for tickets is likely to be high. The tour begins on November 6, 2024 at the Deutsches Theater in Munich and ends on January 26, 2025 at the Frankfurt Festhalle.
