The Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW), known for their outstanding musical productions, are continuing with “Maria Theresa – The Musical“ continue their series of success and announce a new in-house production for autumn 2025. After the overwhelming success of “Rock Me Amadeus – The Falco Musical“ the story of one of Europe's most important monarchs will be brought to the stage this time. The premiere at the Ronacher promises to celebrate the strength, courage and vision of the famous empress in an epic musical experience that will grip the audience both emotionally and musically.
Maria Theresa, born in 1717, was crowned empress in 1740 as the first female ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy. She assumed responsibility for an empire that was at the time marked by political and military challenges. Her reign was overshadowed by conflicts such as the War of Succession and power struggles in Europe. But her achievements extend far beyond the battlefield: she reformed the administration, promoted education and social projects, and laid the foundations for the rise of the Habsburgs as a major power in Europe. Her ability to endure and triumph in a world dominated by men makes her an outstanding figure in history.
A look behind the scenes of the musical
The upcoming musical combines historical drama with modern musical theatre. The composition is by Dieter Falk, known for his work with "Moses - The Ten Commandments" and "Luther"He will arrange and orchestrate the piece together with his son, Paul Falk. The lyrics are by Jonathan Zelter, who works for artists such as Roland Kaiser and Michelle and has already placed several top ten albums. The libretto will be written by Thomas Kahry, an experienced playwright who has already written plays such as "Spatz und Engel" and "Augustin" created.
The production is in the hands of Alex Balga, a renowned director who is known for his work on productions such as "We will Rock You" and "Dirty Dancing" The set is designed by Morgan Large, who has worked in London and international productions such as Wicked and "Disney's Newsies" The choreography is by Jonathan Huor, whose work in musicals such as "Mamma Mia" and "Romeo and Juliet" caused a sensation. The costumes will be designed by Aleksandra Kica, an artist whose work can be admired at the Vienna Volksoper and in Mörbisch, among others.
