Summer tourist traffic at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport increased again last month. A total of 1,43 million passengers took off and landed at BER in August, around 180.000 more than in the holiday month of July 2021. A year ago, in the crisis month of August 2020, around 830.000 passengers were handled at the Schönefeld and Tegel airports; in August 2019 it was almost 3,2 million passengers.

Last month around 12.700 flight movements took place at BER, 1.100 more than in July 2021. In August 2020, around 9.600 aircraft took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel, in August 2019 there were around 25.000 aircraft. In the case of air freight, around 2.150 tons of goods were handled last month, around 150 tons less than in July and around 500 tons more than in August 2020. In August 2019, the month before the crisis, it was around 3.100 tons.

“The further increase in the number of passengers is a positive sign, even if we are still a long way from achieving the result from the pre-crisis year 2019. The vaccination protection that has now been achieved for many people ensures more security when planning vacation and thus also has a positive effect on the demand in air traffic. Despite the still different travel regulations, passengers have regained confidence in the processes from check-in to baggage claim ”, says Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.
