From May 2025, the Bulgarian airline Electra Airways will expand the Cologne/Bonn Airport route network with two new direct connections to Bulgaria. Varna and Burgas, two important port cities on the Black Sea coast, will each be served twice a week. Flights to Varna will start on Tuesdays and Saturdays from May 17, while Burgas will be served on Mondays and Thursdays from May 19.

The flights are operated with an Airbus A320. Electra Airways cooperates with SunExpress, which acts as a sales partner. The tickets can be booked through SunExpress and various tour operators. The new connections are aimed primarily at holidaymakers, as both Varna and Burgas are popular travel destinations. In addition to beaches, both cities offer numerous cultural attractions, including the Assumption Cathedral in Varna and the Sea Garden in Burgas.

Electra Airways was founded in 2016 and specializes in charter and ACMI flight operations. Since 2022 it has been part of the international Vector Group, which also operates a maintenance company in Varna, among other things. With the new route, Electra Airways will offer regular scheduled flights from Cologne/Bonn for the first time. Airport boss Thilo Schmid welcomes the partnership and sees it as an enrichment for the flight offering in North Rhine-Westphalia.
