Three years after the start of construction work on the new pier at Terminal 1 of Munich Airport, the shell work is largely complete. Nevertheless - and as is so often the case at this time, the Covid 19 pandemic is to blame - completion has to be postponed.
The schedule has to be stretched: According to the current status, the new gate will not be operational until the end of 2025 at the earliest. The extension of the construction period and the enormous increase in costs in the construction industry are also associated with an increase in the investment volume. According to current estimates, the airport will have to spend a total of over 600 million euros on the project.
“We assume that the volume of traffic at Munich Airport will return to the pre-crisis level by 2024 – but no later than 2025. With the attractive new lounge areas, we will then ensure a leap in quality in Terminal 1, which gives the airlines operating here long-term development prospects at our airport and thus ensures the competitiveness and future viability of Munich's five-star airport," explains Jost Lammers, Chairman of the Management of Munich Airport GmbH.
The new pier was designed as a right-angled extension of the existing passenger building and protrudes around 320 meters into the western apron of the airport at the height of terminal areas A and B. The overall concept for the expansion envisages a structure divided into three levels, consisting of a core building adjacent to the existing Terminal 1 and a pier. Depending on the size of the aircraft, up to twelve aircraft can be positioned here. The total area of the expansion including the conversions in today's arrival in Module B is around 95.000 square meters.
Steel construction work is currently being carried out on the six head structures of the later passenger boarding bridges and other construction work on the facade. The roofing work that has already begun is also to be continued shortly, weather permitting. All work on the roof and façade of the new pier should be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2023. The erection of the four bridges that will connect the new building with the existing terminal building is scheduled for this summer. The other adjustments made necessary by the new gate on the western apron are going according to plan. The next steps for the allocations required in connection with the interior design will be initiated in April.
