More than 625.300 passengers used Nuremberg Airport during the summer holidays. In the summer holidays of 2019, for comparison, there were 620.600.

The third holiday weekend from August 26 to 28 was particularly busy with more than 50.000 passengers, as reported by the airport in a broadcast. The most popular destination was Antalya with around 400 departures and around 116.000 passengers. Around 4.200 tourist take-offs and landings were counted during the holiday season, compared to 4.900 in the comparable period before the crisis. The significant reduction in aircraft movements with more passengers being carried at the same time can be explained by the trend towards larger and better utilized aircraft.

In order to cope with the high volume of travel, the airport has increased its staff: “We have been running many campaigns in a wide variety of channels since December 2021. Since then, we have been able to hire a good 150 new employees," says Managing Director Michael Hupe. For traffic peaks, there was also help from around 80 volunteers from administration, technology and management. In addition, they are limited in time 19 assistants from Turkey employed.

During the holidays, the staff loaded around 600.000 suitcases and bags in the baggage sorting department, that is 13.000 pieces of luggage per day. Customer demand is also high in retail at the airport: the shops and especially the duty free shop recorded the highest sales in their history. Similarly good values were recorded in the parking business: even more parking spaces were booked than before Corona. The new P4 multi-storey car park was largely occupied.

“Our balance sheet is very gratifying. Nevertheless, the requirements remain high, because our main season lasts well into October," Hupe continues. Winter is already announcing itself with numerous holiday destinations and attractive city destinations.
