In the last few days, Austrian Airlines had to struggle twice with technical problems on the OE-LWN. First the Embraer 195 went AOG in Innsbruck and after the transfer to Vienna there were landing gear problems on a commercial flight to Hanover, which led to a return landing in the Austrian capital.

On December 3, 2023, the Embraer 195 with the registration OE-LWN flew from Vienna to Innsbruck as scheduled. Technical problems were then discovered in Tyrol, so that the return flight could not be carried out. Since Innsbruck had no technical staff for this type of machine, this had to be flown in with the following scheduled flight. However, the flight originally planned with LWN had to be cancelled.

According to Austrian Airlines, the technicians were able to fix the defect, which the company did not specify. However, the OE-LWN was not able to take off immediately because a new "problem" arose: The crew had already reached their maximum working hours, meaning that they were no longer allowed to fly. A replacement crew was not available in Innsbruck, so the flight attendants and pilots spent the night in Tyrol and transferred the regional jet ferry to Vienna the following day, i.e. without passengers.

Return landing immediately after ferry flight

The OE-LWN was then to fly to Hanover as OS293. This Embraer 195 took off, but the cockpit crew then found a problem with the landing gear. They flew a few laps to burn off excess fuel and then touched down safely at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The machine was then again handed over to the mechanics and engineers of the company's own technical department.

A spokeswoman for Austrian Airlines told Aviation.Direct, among other things: “On December 3, the OELWN was written to AOG after OS903 with technical problems. Since there is no technical support on site, the technicians from Vienna had to travel to Innsbruck on the OS901 in the evening. The OELWN was then repaired immediately, but the crew's working hours had already been exceeded at that time, which is why the machine was not returned to Vienna until yesterday (December 4). The reason for the return landing of the OS293 on Sunday was an error message on the landing gear, the machine is currently being checked by our technical department".
