Arriving by train to the airport, handing the suitcase over to the conductor and then straight to the gate at the airport? This is exactly what Austrian Airlines and the Austrian Federal Railways are testing on selected Railjet connections as part of the Airail cooperation.

From August 23, 2021 it should be possible for passengers in Linz and Salzburg to check in their luggage on the Raijet train during their journey. The suitcase receives the label during the train journey and ÖBB and Austrian Airlines then take care of the onward transport to the destination. After arriving at Vienna Airport, Airail guests can go straight to their gate and board in a relaxed manner. All checked-in luggage can be accepted at the destination airport as usual, according to AUA.

“Closer dovetailing with the railways is an important part of our strategy. With the Airail baggage check in on the train, we can eliminate a major disadvantage of a feeder train journey compared to a feeder flight. We want to bring more and more Airail passengers comfortably by train to our hub in Vienna and then out into the world by plane, ”explains AUA General Director Alexis von Honesbroech.

The baggage drop-off service in the Railjet will initially be introduced on a test basis from 23 August to 31 October 2021 for the Airail routes Salzburg Hauptbahnhof - Vienna Airport and Linz Hauptbahnhof - Vienna Airport with two connections each.

Andreas Matthä, General Director of the Austrian Federal Railways, says: “With Airail we offer our customers a continuous chain of mobility during their journey. So you can get comfortably and quickly on ÖBB trains from Salzburg or Linz city center directly to Vienna Airport. Checking in luggage on selected trains should make the journey even easier in the future and convince even more people to choose the train ”.

Baggage check-in is possible on a test basis from 23 August to 31 October 2021 on the following daily connections:
