After years of delay, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport is due to open at the end of this month. The project devoured billions of euros and needs fresh money again. The Supervisory Board approved a EUR 552 million loan on Friday.

This is requested from the shareholders, i.e. the Federal Republic of Germany and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. Company boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup assumes that the crisis will only stabilize when there is a generally available vaccine. Until then, it will remain difficult for the entire industry.

“BER is ready for operation! Despite all prophecies of doom, we have achieved our goal. Thanks to those who fought and believed in us. Now we are facing the new challenge of overcoming the corona-related financial problems, ”said Supervisory Board Chairman Rainer Bretschneider.

Daldrup adds: “In three weeks we will finally have a modern airport that will give all of Eastern Germany important economic impetus. Now it is important to have fair opportunities in international competition and to grant the capital's airport adequate flight rights to Asia. In order to make the German economy in all parts of the country as successful as it was before the pandemic, we need three international airports in Germany with direct intercontinental connections. Two airports in the west of the republic are not enough. "
