Portugal: Strike resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations

Travelers had to be very patient on Sunday at Lisbon Airport, because a strike at the ground handler Groundforce led to the cancellation of many flights. According to official figures, 81,3 percent of the workforce has stopped working, so that over 10 flights had to be canceled from midnight to 30:300 am.

According to Lisbon Airport, a total of 511 connections were registered on Sunday. The vast majority had to be deleted due to the industrial action, which is already in the second round. Some airlines switched to other airports, although these are not necessarily near the Portuguese capital. Emirates Airline decided to run the Lisbon circuit only to Larnaka. The affected passengers should be transported to their destination as soon as possible.

Since the Groundforce strike was not limited to Lisbon, but work was also halted at other airports where the company operates, there were also many failures in Funchal and Faro, among others. Porto Santo, on the other hand, is said to have been largely spared.

The responsible union complains that the current situation is unsustainable for the employees and also claims that wages and salaries should not have been paid on time. Employees will no longer work overtime until October 31, 2021. On the days of July 31, August 1 and August 2, 2021, there will again be work stoppages at the airports where Groundforce is active.

The whole situation is particularly tricky, because the company is a joint venture between Pasogal (50,1 percent) and TAP Air Portugal (49,9 percent). Groundforce accused the airline of having 12 million euros in the chalk and thus causing the problems. This representation was sharply rejected by TAP on Saturday. You don't owe the Groundforce any money.
