The Berlin Senate is pushing ahead with plans for the development of the former Tegel airport site in the northwest of the city. At its meeting on Tuesday, the Senate approved an initial draft development plan for a 13-hectare area. This area includes the entrance area of the planned Urban Tech Republic (UTR) industrial and research park, as Urban Development and Construction Senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) announced.
The Urban Tech Republic will provide space for up to 1.000 companies, start-ups and scientific institutions. A university campus is also planned. The development plan allows for the conversion of existing buildings at the former airport. Gaebler expects that the first companies will be able to move into the UTR site in 2027 or 2028.
Several thousand refugees are currently housed on the airport premises. These accommodations are expected to be in use until the end of 2025. However, the Urban Tech Republic area will not be affected by this, says Gaebler.
In addition to the UTR, the Senate is planning the Kurt Schumacher Quarter, a new urban district on the former airport site. A draft development plan for this is to be completed soon and submitted to the Senate. The first construction work is expected in 2026.
