In the third quarter of 2020, Dortmund Airport counted 462.252 passengers. In direct comparison with the same period last year, there were 40 percent fewer travelers. However, the airport points out that the development of passengers in the individual months has been very different.

The recovery in air traffic that began in July 2020 continued into the beginning of the third quarter. In July 134.192 passengers used Dortmund Airport for their trip. That is half as many as in July 2019. In the first two weeks of August, the opening of the Wizzair base again resulted in a significant increase in passenger numbers, so that Dortmund Airport around 71 percent of its passengers (181.250) throughout August. from the previous year again. The number of flights fell by four percent over the same period.

Since the end of the summer vacation, the number of passengers has decreased significantly. In addition to the end of the holiday, this is mainly due to the fact that the number of infections is increasing in many holiday countries and the RKI has to constantly identify new risk areas. Numerous routes from Dortmund Airport are also affected. Including popular destinations such as Mallorca, Budapest, Vienna and Lisbon. Other countries, on the other hand, have imposed entry bans or restrictions for travelers from Germany. The deletion of connections and the thinning of the flight plan are the result. In September the number of passengers therefore fell again to 56 percent of the previous year's level (141.371).

“After significantly more passengers than expected flew from Dortmund in the summer, the good development has recently flattened again due to new travel warnings and restrictions. The winter flight schedule indicates that in the fourth quarter of 2020 we have to assume that the number of passengers will halve compared to 2019. Nonetheless, Dortmund Airport is the airport in Germany that currently has the lowest percentage loss in passenger numbers compared to the previous year ”, Marketing Manager at Dortmund Airport.
