The third quarter of 2022 was financially successful for Lufthansa. You can show a surplus of 809 million euros. In the same period last year, it was in the red with 72 million euros. The group's operating profit rose to 1,1 billion euros, more than four times as high as in the third quarter of 2021.
In the previous week, Lufthansa had already significantly raised its forecast for the annual profit for 2022. An adjusted EBIT of more than one billion euros is expected. The board of directors around Carsten Spohr also expects to remain in the black in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The passenger area of the Lufthansa Group has suffered particularly badly from the effects of the corona pandemic. For the first time since the beginning of the crisis, this was able to fly back into the black. But this is also due to the fact that in the summer of 2022 the ticket prices were raised extremely sharply in some cases. The freight and maintenance areas are also on record course and, according to Lufthansa, will once again exceed the previous year's figures. The subsidiaries Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines are to repay the state-secured loans granted by Austria and Belgium early by the end of 2022.
The number of passengers carried by passenger airlines increased significantly in the third quarter compared to the previous year. Between July and September, more than 33 million passengers flew with the airlines in the Lufthansa Group (same period last year: 20 million).
“In the third quarter, the Lufthansa Group achieved a very good result with an operating profit of over one billion euros, demonstrating that it has regained profitability. All business areas, both passenger airlines and logistics and MRO, have contributed to this success. This once again underscores the strength of our portfolio. The Lufthansa Group has left the pandemic behind economically and is looking to the future with optimism. Because the desire to travel and with it the demand for plane tickets is still unbroken. Now we're focusing on the future and launching the biggest product refresh in our history. We are investing in 200 new aircraft and offering prospects for our employees around the world. It is and remains our aim to further strengthen our position among the top 5 airline groups in the world," says Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr.
