Investments in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) startups have declined sharply in recent years, from EUR 6,8 billion in 2021 to just EUR 1,2 billion in 2023.
This is due to the difficult economic situation and concerns about the economic viability of air taxi services. A study by Roland Berger and DLR shows that air taxis could be profitable in the first few years, especially in premium niche markets, with the high operating costs due to take-off and landing fees and battery costs being crucial.
The success of AAM services depends largely on the efficiency of the entire ecosystem, which includes vertiport operators. Air taxi manufacturers predict that prices for such services could compete with those of traditional taxi or limousine rides, but many of these assumptions remain unconfirmed.
