Austrian Airlines had to cancel route OS601 from Vienna to Moscow due to a lack of permits. The carrier followed the recommendation of EASA and wanted to circumnavigate the airspace of Belarus. However, Russia did not agree and did not give the AUA flight permission.
The Austrian carrier is not an isolated case, as Moscow refused to grant Air France permission yesterday and today. According to Austrian Airlines, every change in flight routes must be officially approved. This is exactly what the Russian Federation refuses to do. To what extent long AUA flights could be affected is still unclear.
Some EU countries refuse the Belarusian Belavia to use their airspace. It is a national solo effort, as the ban has not yet been promulgated at Union level. According to the commission, the legal basis must first be created. This is to prevent Belavia from being able to assert any claims for damages. Independently of this, the nation states can already issue flight bans at their own risk.
