SkyUp Airlines launches crew support program

SkyUp Airlines, the emerging Ukrainian airline, has launched a groundbreaking program to support the emotional well-being of its crew members in 2024: the SkyUp Peer Support Program (PSP).

This initiative represents a significant step in the advancement of aviation safety, as it accompanies and supports both pilots and cabin crew in emotionally challenging situations. While programs of this kind are already mandatory for pilots in the European Union, extending them to cabin crew is an exceptional and progressive measure that is rarely seen in the European aviation industry.

A comprehensive peer support system for the entire crew

The SkyUp Peer Support Program was created not only to meet the highest international flight safety standards, but also to create a working environment that proactively supports the emotional well-being of crew members. The pressures that come with working in the aviation industry, whether due to unpredictable situations on board, long working hours or balancing private and professional life, can lead to emotional stress that affects the performance and well-being of the crew. This is where the PSP steps in by offering employees the opportunity to turn to trained colleagues - so-called "peers" - in a confidential setting. These peers are specially trained to provide emotional support and come from the ranks of pilots and cabin crew to ensure the best possible care on an equal footing.

International training and targeted selection of peer advisors

The careful development and implementation of the program began in May 2023 and lasted until August 2024. During this time, the peers were selected and specially trained. The training took place as part of the British Civil Aviation Authority's Pilot and Peer Assistance Awareness and Training program and gave the participants the knowledge they needed to provide professional support to their colleagues.

Another innovative element is the specially set up internal website, through which crew members can easily request support. With just a few clicks, a peer who is familiar with similar challenges can be selected and thus provides individual advice. This online platform gives crew members a quick and, above all, confidential way to seek emotional support - a crucial aspect that makes it easier for employees to open up.

Confidentiality and security at the heart of

Confidentiality and trust are the core principles of the SkyUp Peer Support program. It is vital that crew members can seek help without fear of judgement. Peer meetings and consultations are subject to strict confidentiality rules and only in rare, safety-related cases may disclosure be necessary. This relationship of trust creates a safe atmosphere in which crew can seek support to remain emotionally strong and thus ensure the safety of the entire flight operation.

According to Diana Busuyok, flight psychologist at SkyUp and curator of the Peer Support Program, the goal is clear: “We want to create a psychologically safe environment in aviation where everyone can receive confidential professional support from a colleague.” This statement underlines SkyUp’s values, which strongly care about the well-being and safety of the team.

The importance of emotional support for flight safety

Emotional support in aviation is becoming increasingly important, as the mental state of the crew has a direct impact on flight safety. Stress, fatigue and emotional strain can not only affect work performance, but also the ability to act quickly and appropriately in critical situations. The SkyUp Peer Support program therefore not only contributes to the health of employees, but is also an essential part of a comprehensive safety concept.

The implementation of this program is a remarkable step for SkyUp, especially in the Ukrainian aviation industry, where it is considered the first of its kind. SkyUp is also setting new standards in Europe by extending the program to cabin crew, while similar initiatives mostly focus exclusively on pilots. This shows the company's clear will to develop innovative solutions that go far beyond regulatory requirements.

Future prospects and further security measures

The introduction of the Peer Support Program is just one of several measures SkyUp has taken as part of its safety strategy. In 2023, a flight safety risk management system was also introduced in collaboration with Osprey Flight Solutions. This system uses advanced technologies and data analytics to minimize risks in air traffic and ensure optimal routes and flight plans. The integration of such systems shows that SkyUp takes a holistic approach that takes into account both technical and human factors to continuously improve safety in flight operations.

With the SkyUp Peer Support Program, the Ukrainian airline is setting new standards in the aviation industry. It is a groundbreaking program that not only takes into account the psychological stress of crew members, but also improves flight safety through emotional support. The involvement of both pilots and cabin crew in such a program is unique and shows SkyUp's strong commitment to the well-being of its employees and the safety of its passengers. In an industry in which psychological and emotional stress often plays a major role, the Peer Support Program offers important support to ensure the professionalism and resilience of crew members under all circumstances.
