The income is in the basement because of the CoV crisis, but at the same time the management wants to invest in the expansion of the airport. The supervisory board of Salzburg Airport met yesterday to decide on investment needs.

The corona crisis hit aviation with full force. Air traffic is only recovering very slowly and has practically come to a standstill since then. The airports are only kept afloat by injecting money. Nevertheless: The management team wants to take 100 million euros into their hands over the next few years to modernize the airport.

Among other things, the plans provide for Terminal 1, in which the arrival and departure area is located, to be completely rebuilt. Because parts of the complex consisting of 16 individual buildings are more than 50 years old, reports the Courier. But today no final decision could be made. This should now fall in June.

In view of the upcoming investments, it is quite possible that the owners have to pump in money, according to supervisory board chairman Christian Stöckl: "At least when it comes to large investments." The supervisory board and SPÖ vice mayor Bernhard Auinger can also imagine grants from the owners.

Sale of land could cover half of the investment required

He also brings another financing variant into play: the sale of a property. A potential buyer has already been found. Österreichische Post AG has been looking for building land for a new distribution center for a long time - and is now desperate. Because in the Salzburg area this is proving to be quite difficult. With a sale, Salzburg Airport could cover half of the planned investments.

An area in the immediate vicinity of the airport and the motorway would also make the post office cheer, says Franz Reichl, Head of Post Logistics for Western Austria. "Of course the location is ideal, so the proximity to the airport, barracks, Wals logistics center and the connection to the motorway," says Reichl. A lucrative business for both sides. But nothing will come of it for now. Because, at twelve hectares, the space required by the Post is significantly larger than the airport's land reserves.
