The Berlin-Brandenburg-Airport is now also an airport from a legal point of view, because the Joint Upper Aviation Authority Berlin-Brandenburg granted permission to start operations on Thursday and handed over the airport operating certificate. Both documents are a mandatory requirement for operating a commercial airport in Germany.

With the necessary permits in hand, BER is now looking forward to the opening, which will take place at the end of October, very calmly and with great joy. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Head of the Airport, said: “I am delighted about these two certificates from the aviation authority that are important to us. We were able to prove that the entire airport facility and the installed equipment meet the requirements and function properly. After the building regulations gave us permission to use Terminal 1 at the end of April, we now have the last necessary notifications that we have an airport that is ready for operation in accordance with all the rules and regulations. From a human perspective, there is nothing to prevent the opening of BER on October 31, 2020. "

BER commissioning begins with the opening of Terminal 1 of BER on October 31, 2020. On this day, an Easyjet and a Lufthansa machine will arrive at the same time and be the first to be received and processed at the main pier of the new terminal. On the morning of November 4th, FBB put the southern runway into operation with the landing of a Qatar Airways aircraft. From this day on, the new BER night flight restrictions will also apply. The move from Tegel to BER will end with the last Air France flight from Berlin-Tegel to Paris on November 8, 2020.

“Willy Brandt Airport is one of the most important infrastructure projects for Germany and will make a decisive contribution to the development of the State of Brandenburg. The BER was put through its paces by the Joint Upper Aviation Authority Berlin-Brandenburg. With today's handover of the notices, we have now set the last important milestone for the commissioning of BER ”, says Guido Beermann, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure of the State of Brandenburg.

The airport company has been successfully testing BER since July 2020 as part of the internationally established and proven ORAT program together with 9.000 volunteer testers. The training program will continue until October 15, 2020 with the aim of finalizing the processes.
