There has been speculation for a few weeks and now it's fixed: Lufthansa will reactivate part of its Airbus A380 fleet. The group is currently checking how many there will be and to which destinations they will be used.
The media release from Lufthansa that the superjumbos – contrary to repeated statements by CEO Carsten Spohr – will be brought back into the air, did not come as a particular surprise. For a few weeks now, the Kranich boss has been hoping that Airbus A380s could fly again.
The sub-fleet originally consisted of 14 copies. Six have already been sold. The remaining eight will remain part of the Lufthansa fleet. Currently these in Spain and France in the so-called long-time storage. The super jumbos are expected to fly again from summer 2023. The Lufthansa Executive Board will determine the exact number at a later date.
"In the summer of 2023, we not only expect a much more reliable air traffic system around the world, but will also be able to welcome you back on board our Airbus A380. We decided today to put this still very popular aircraft back into service with Lufthansa from summer 2023. In addition, we will be strengthening and modernizing our fleets with around 50 new Airbus A350, Boeing 787 and Boeing 777-9 long-haul aircraft and over 60 new Airbus A320/321 aircraft in the next three years alone,” says Lufthansa. The Airbus A380 has 509 seats at the crane.
