The Concorde revolutionized aviation with its ability to fly at twice the speed of sound (Mach 2, approximately 2.179 kilometers per hour). It was thus faster than the Earth's rotation, allowing passengers to cross the Atlantic in around three hours and, at cruising altitudes of up to 18.000 meters, to witness the Earth's curvature. Flights from London to New York, which once took hours, were reduced to just about three and a half hours. This unprecedented speed and the associated comfort made the Concorde the epitome of luxury and efficiency in air travel. It became a "beacon of European innovation," a "symbol of technological achievement and elegance." Its sleek shape, drop-down nose, and characteristic delta wings made it unmistakable and a design classic.
But despite its initial splendor and success, the Concorde was faced with economic and technical challenges. One of the biggest problems was the so-called Sonic boom, which was caused by breaking the sound barrier and led to considerable noise pollution. This resulted in international flight bans over land, which significantly limited the aircraft's commercial appeal. The Concorde could only reach supersonic speeds over the ocean, limiting the number of profitable routes to a few transatlantic flights. Furthermore, the Concorde was extremely expensive to operate, its fuel consumption was immense, and its maintenance complex. This meant that only a few airlines used it—mainly British Airways and Air France. Its niche was transporting well-heeled businessmen and celebrities who were willing to pay deep for the time savings and the unique experience.
The tragic end: A crash and its consequences
Am July 25, 2000 the unimaginable happened: A picture of the wreckage of the Concorde went around the world. Air France Flight 4590 crashed immediately after takeoff from Paris' Roissy Airport (Charles de Gaulle). The tragic accident killed all 109 people on board (100 passengers and nine crew members), as well as four people on the ground. Investigations revealed that a metal fragment left on the runway by a previously departed aircraft had damaged the Concorde's tire. A piece of the tire then punctured one of the wing's fuel tanks, causing fuel to leak and ignite. The fire and loss of control of the engines led to the crash.
This devastating accident was a shock to the aviation world and the public, who had considered the Concorde to be virtually infallible. The accident led to a temporary suspension of Concorde operations and extensive technical revisions, including reinforced fuel tanks and more durable tires. However, the aftermath of the crash, coupled with the changed conditions in aviation after the events of September 11, 2001, which led to a general decline in air travel, sealed Concorde's fate. Operating costs were too high, demand too low, and public confidence was permanently shaken. In 2003, after 27 years of service, Concorde was finally retired.
