After more than two decades, Café Sacher Graz, a symbol of Austrian coffee house culture, is closing its doors. The Sacher Group, known for the world-famous original Sacher-Torte and its hotels in Vienna and Salzburg, announced that the café will cease operations in the coming months. This decision was made after intensive review, as neither increasing sales nor sufficient cost reductions would have been able to bring the café into profitability.
Opened in 2002, Café Sacher Graz was a popular meeting place for coffee lovers and offered a touch of Viennese elegance in the Styrian capital. Matthias Winkler, CEO of the Sacher Group, explained that despite the efforts of the 16 employees who worked seven days a week, the economic situation was not sustainable in the long term. "We examined every possibility, but unfortunately no solution was feasible that could secure long-term operations," said Winkler.
Special thanks were given to the employees who made the café a place of genuine hospitality. The Sacher Group emphasised that all employees should be supported in finding new career prospects. Thanks were also given to the guests who made the café a place of encounter and enjoyment.
Despite the closure, the Sacher Group remains connected to the city of Graz. Winkler did not rule out the possibility of a return in the future. "We are not saying goodbye, but rather goodbye." The Sacher brand, a synonym for tradition and elegance, will therefore continue to be a part of Graz's history.
