In 2025, travelers will increasingly look for ways to foster human connection while creating unforgettable experiences. According to Skyscanner's latest travel trends report, vacationers in Germany are looking for events that foster a sense of community.

Whether it's sporting events, impressive art exhibitions or gaming holidays, more and more people are seeking experiences that emphasize being with like-minded people. The report, which is based on data from over 18.000 travelers and extensive industry insights, shows not only the hottest travel destinations, but also the changes in travelers' behavior and preferences.

Popular travel destinations: Away from the crowds

A key finding of the report is the growing trend towards alternative travel destinations. More and more German travelers want to leave the beaten track and discover smaller, lesser-known places. The list of the most sought-after destinations is headed by Reggio Calabria in Italy, which has seen an impressive 747 percent increase in searches. The region scores with its beautiful beaches, rich culture and excellent value for money.

Essaouira in Morocco is also enjoying growing popularity (+724%). The port city impresses with fresh fish, surfing opportunities and a charming old town that invites you to linger. Siem Reap in Cambodia (+294%) is also becoming increasingly attractive, especially due to its proximity to the world-famous ruins of Angkor Wat. The analysis shows a clear trend towards less frequented locations, which gives travelers the opportunity to have authentic experiences away from the tourist crowds.

Focus on value for money

Although the desire to travel is unabated, value for money remains a decisive factor for holidaymakers. According to the Skyscanner survey, 64 percent of respondents cited the cost of hotels and 57 percent cited flights as the main criteria for choosing their holiday destination.

Over the last 12 months, there has been a significant drop in airfares to several destinations, making them more attractive. For example, Kaunas in Lithuania saw a 41 percent drop in prices, followed by Luxor in Egypt (-40%) and Agadir in Morocco (-34%). These price reductions are due to the introduction of new routes and an increased frequency of low-cost flights.

The new travel trends: sport, nature and community

One of the most significant developments for 2025 is the growing interest in communal experiences. Sports tourism in particular is enjoying increasing popularity. Around 42 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds and 27 percent of all German travelers plan to travel to a sporting event. The fascination with sporting events is reinforced by media such as the series "Formula 1: Drive to Survive", which promotes enthusiasm for live events.

Another notable trend is astro-tourism. Travelers specifically look for places suitable for observing natural phenomena such as the Northern Lights or solar eclipses. Almost 48 percent of respondents said they would like to see the Northern Lights, which underlines the trend towards astronomy.

Health and Sustainability on Vacation

The health tourism movement will also grow significantly. More and more travelers want to not only recharge their batteries but also strengthen their resilience through so-called "reset retreats". The most popular destinations for such retreats are Phuket in Thailand, Manila in the Philippines and Malé in the Maldives.

In addition, there is a growing awareness of sustainability. According to the report, over 50 percent of travelers try to visit less touristy areas and minimize their impact on the communities they visit. This shows that travelers not only strive for personal experiences, but also want to take responsibility for the environment and the cultures they visit.

Shaping the Future of Travel

The travel industry will continue to evolve in 2025, driven by trends such as artificial intelligence, dynamic pricing and the desire for sustainable holiday experiences. Airlines are increasingly using AI to create personalized offers tailored to travelers' desires. Travel experiences are becoming more interactive and oriented towards users' desires, making it easier to move from inspiration to booking.

At a time when human connections and shared experiences are more important than ever, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for travelers. The search for authentic experiences, the desire for shared adventures and the pursuit of sustainability will forever change the way we travel.
