Tyrol and Vorarlberg require two army helicopters

The governors of the Austrian states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Anton Mattle and Markus Wallner (both ÖVP) call on the Ministry of Defense to station at least two army helicopters in Vomp. The demand is not entirely new, as the FPÖ has been demanding this since 2015.

In a joint letter, the two provincial governors addressed Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, who also belongs to the ÖVP. The letter argues, among other things, that the stationing of two military helicopters would make it possible to react much more quickly in emergencies. The security of supply for the population would also improve.

Especially in the event of flooding and/or avalanche accidents, army helicopters would be indispensable. For geographical reasons, the two federal states would be much more affected than, for example, the east of Austria, according to the two state governors.

The Vomp location would be ideal because both Vorarlberg and Tyrol would benefit. At the same time, the costs would be lower if the two federal states shared the desired helicopters. It is also mentioned that in the past there have always been delays in assistance missions because the required aircraft first had to be flown in from other bases.

The Ministry of Defense confirms that the letter signed by the two governors has been received. Concrete commitments are not yet to be made in public and it is pointed out that the matter will first be examined extensively.
