The lights will go out at Doncaster Sheffield Airport in the UK on October 31, 2022. The airport will close and is to be converted into a warehouse and logistics center. After years of losses, the owners are no longer willing to compensate for the annual shortfalls.
The Peel Airports Group tried before to find an investor, which takes over the regional airport. But nobody was found and the public sector does not want to grant any subsidies. Therefore, the plan announced a few months ago comes into effect: Flight operations will probably be stopped forever at the end of October 2022. The existing buildings are to function as warehouses and a logistics center in the future. The area should no longer be used for flying.
Doncaster Sheffield has suffered heavy losses every year since it opened as a civil airport. It has never been possible to run this airport at least to cover costs. Only a few airlines could be inspired to use it. There was hope after that Opening of a Wizz Air UK base, but this was after a very short time shut down again.
At the moment, the DSA is only used by BH Air, Wizz Air and Tui Airways. Numerous other carriers have tried in the past, including Ryanair, Easyjet, Aer Lingus, Lynx Air and Flybe, with little success. After 17 years as a civil airport, the project is deemed to have failed and the airport will therefore be closed on October 31, 2022.
