Vienna: Lauda Europe announces ultra-short haul destination Kosice

Austrian Airlines will face competition on the Vienna-Kosice route from November 2021, because Ryanair will offer this route twice a week. The aircraft used will be the Airbus A320 from Lauda Europe.

The distance between the two cities is around 365 kilometers as the crow flies or around 500 kilometers by road. In the future, two carriers will match each other, whereby the fact that Lauda Europe wants to fly on Friday and Monday traffic days indicates the target group of weekly commuters. Possibly they want to get Eastern Slovaks working in Austria off the streets and into the air. Tickets are currently on sale from around 17 euros one-way. The competitor Austrian Airlines charges significantly higher entry prices, with catering and luggage also having to be paid for separately.

Amman is to be reactivated

As a laudamotion, the Ryanair group briefly had the destination Amman in its program from Vienna. This was not continued after only one winter season. Now they want to try a new attempt under the mainline brand. From November 2, 2021, Lauda Europe's Airbus A320s are scheduled to commute between the two capitals on Tuesday and Saturday. The starting price of the tickets is currently around 30 euros one-way.

Numerous airlines have already presented quite extensive winter offers, but it remains to be seen - also with regard to the events in the 2020/21 winter flight schedule - how the policy will behave with regard to entry and quarantine regulations. If, as in the previous year, there is a drastic tightening, it is to be expected that many announced routes will not be taken up due to a lack of demand or that existing routes could be shortened or even temporarily suspended. The further development of the pandemic and political decisions cannot yet be foreseen.

The term "ultra-short-haul" is probably the wrong choice here, as there are much shorter routes available from Vienna, including Prague, Budapest, Munich and others. Especially to Kosice, the travel time difference compared to road and rail is significantly in favor of a flight.
