Johann Philipp Spiegelfeld, who flies for Austrian Airlines as a flight captain, was elected as the new commander last weekend during the general meeting of the Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria.

The previous commander of the Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria, Niklas Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz, explains the change: “Years ago we initiated a modernization and rejuvenation process in order to meet the demands placed on us as one of the largest exclusively voluntary aid organizations. We are therefore handing over command to the highly qualified and experienced Johann-Philipp Spiegelfeld from the group of over 2.000 Maltese people.”

The transfer of command takes place shortly before the start of the international Maltese pilgrimage to Lourdes, in which around 5.000 Maltese from all over the world take part every year. Spiegelfeld leads the delegation from Austria as an experienced operations manager. “We are responsible for around 60 people we look after – those in need, sick people and people with disabilities. It will be a special experience for me to experience my participation in Lourdes this year not only as an operations manager, but also as a commander for the first time,” said Spiegelfeld.
