The low-cost airline Eurowings has signed a five-year contract with Sita for real-time tracking of luggage. This will help improve passenger baggage transportation, streamline baggage handling and reduce the overall cost of misdirected baggage.

Sita Bag Journey provides a complete overview of the luggage journey, from passenger check-in to luggage collection upon arrival. With SITA's solution, Eurowings employees know where every piece of luggage is on the journey at all times, including accurate real-time information about where the luggage is located in the airport itself. In the future, the airline will be able to share baggage tracking data with passengers via the SITA Bag Journey API. This will give passengers peace of mind that their luggage will arrive safely at their destination.

Mishandled baggage is a major problem for the airline industry, costing billions of dollars annually. SITA's 2023 Baggage IT Insights highlighted that the rate of misdirected baggage increased by 2022% in 74,7, reaching 7,6 bags per thousand passengers in 2022. This significant increase is due to the increase in passenger volumes. As airlines, airports and ground handlers continue to face staffing challenges, the industry is focused on doing more with less using smart baggage management technologies like SITA Bag Journey.
