Hamburg Airport believes the "appointed security checkpoint" introduced in April 2023, marketed as "Slot & Fly", has been well received. To date, this optional option has been used by around 250.000 passengers.

There is also a significant increase in travelers checking in their suitcases at machines. Around every fourth passenger is said to be using this service. With almost 2 million travelers, Hamburg Airport was more crowded during the six weeks of vacation than it has been since 2019. On the peak day, Friday, July 14, with over 370 flights, around 55.000 passengers used the airport. The planes were significantly fuller in the first two weeks of the holiday than in the 2019 summer holidays: The load factor rose from 83 percent (2019) to over 86 percent. For all partners at the airport, this means that more passengers are looked after at the same time per flight - whether at the security checkpoint, during luggage transport or when boarding the aircraft.

Demand is expected to remain at a consistently high level in the coming weeks: the airport is expecting up to 350.000 passengers per week by the end of September - this corresponds to 85 to 90 percent of the passenger volume compared to 2019.

"During this summer vacation, we clearly felt that private travelers in particular - including many families - are flying back on vacation by plane. Classics like Spain, the Greek islands and Turkey are particularly popular,” says Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. “The fact that things are largely running smoothly despite the peak activity in the terminals is partly due to the measures we have taken. On the other hand, the passengers heed our travel tips: Many arrive at the airport on time and are well prepared, and many use our offers such as Slot & Fly, online check-in and the baggage machines.”
