In the first quarter of 2023, Lufthansa was able to increase consolidated revenue by around 40 percent to seven billion euros. Due to increased ticket prices, average revenues increased by 2019 percent compared to 19. The bottom line is still a loss of 273 million euros.

Lufthansa was thus able to improve by 2022 percent compared to the first quarter of 53, which was heavily influenced by the scaremongering surrounding the Omicron variant. The group management assumes that for the full year 2023 the result achieved in 2019 will be exceeded. This is subject to the proviso that there are no external factors adversely affecting the business.

“The Lufthansa Group is back on course. After a good first quarter, in which we were able to significantly improve our earnings, we are now expecting a travel boom in the summer and a new record in our traffic revenue for the year as a whole. On short and medium-haul tourist routes, demand is already exceeding the 2019 level. The focus now is on offering our guests a consistent premium product experience again with all airlines in the group. Our guests are already benefiting from numerous product improvements, both on the ground and on board. The Lufthansa Group is well positioned to further strengthen its position among the top 5 airline groups in global competition,” says CEO Carsten Spohr.

The group increased its sales year-on-year by 40 percent to 7,0 billion euros (previous year: 5,0 billion euros). Adjusted EBIT was
-273 million euros (previous year: -577 million euros). The company thus achieved a significantly better result in the first quarter than in the first quarter of 2019 (Adjusted EBIT 1st quarter 2019: -336 million euros). The adjusted EBIT margin rose accordingly to -3,9 percent (previous year: -11,5 percent). The net loss fell by 20 percent to -467 million euros (previous year: -584 million euros).

In the first quarter, significantly more people flew with the airlines in the Lufthansa Group than in the previous year. Overall, the airlines in the Lufthansa Group welcomed 22 million passengers on board between January and March (previous year: 13 million). Capacity was significantly expanded to 75 percent of pre-crisis levels in 2019 due to sustained high demand. In the first quarter, it was 30 percent above the previous year's level.

The revenue of the passenger airlines increased in the first quarter by 73 percent to 5,2 billion euros (previous year: 3,0 billion euros). Above all, the development of average yields, which were 19 percent above the level of 2019 in the first quarter, testifies to the strength of demand. On long-haul routes, the increase in average yields was even 25 percent. However, due to seasonality and preparations for expanding flight operations in the summer months, the result was negative. The passenger airlines generated an adjusted EBIT of -2023 million euros in the first quarter of 512 (previous year: -1,1 billion euros).

The Logistics business segment also achieved an operating profit in the first quarter of 2023. However, due to the market-wide normalization of air freight rates, this was below the record result of the first quarter of the previous year. Last year, the crisis-related reduction in capacity combined with a sharp increase in demand due to disrupted supply chains led to record sales. Lufthansa Cargo generated an Adjusted EBIT of 151 million euros in the first quarter (previous year: 495 million euros).

In the first quarter of 2023, Lufthansa Technik improved on the result of the previous year. The high demand for air travel led to a further increase in demand for maintenance and repair services, and revenues rose accordingly. Lufthansa Technik generated an Adjusted EBIT of 135 million euros in the first quarter (previous year: 129 million euros).
