The Lufthansa Supervisory Board has an unscheduled special meeting. The background is that the group will cancel further flights in July and August 2022 and, according to the Handelsblatt, the employee representatives are of the opinion that the management board has not sufficiently informed the supervisory board of the full extent of the flight chaos.
In the meantime, Lufthansa has severely restricted the sale of flight tickets. Among other things, the cheapest fare classes were “nulled out” throughout the route network, i.e. removed from sale. Intensive work is currently being done to rebook passengers affected by cancellations on other connections. According to the current state of information, this process is expected to last until July 6, 2022. The booking system should then be opened normally again.
The current sales restrictions primarily affect destinations on short and medium-haul routes as well as within Germany. Air tickets are only available in the most expensive booking classes. Lufthansa wants to keep "space" free for passengers who have to be rebooked due to further upcoming cancellations. The entire calendar month of July 2022 and parts of August 2022 are affected.
It is already clear that Lufthansa will not be able to operate at least 3.000 flights in these two months. In view of the current sales restriction, it can be assumed that this will be extended. It is expected that around 2022 more flights could be canceled before the lower fare classes are released for the period up to and including September 5.000. In the next few days, the group of companies wants to comment on this and communicate the full extent for the time being.
