A new photovoltaic system will be built near Friedrichshafen Airport under the project name “Energiepark am See”. In addition to the airport, LZ Horizon GmbH & Co. KG and Stadtwerke am See GmbH & Co. KG are behind it.

Solar systems are to be set up around the exhibition center and on the airport area. These are intended to be used to generate electrical energy, which is initially to be stored in accumulators. Excess energy will also be used to produce hydrogen.

The “Energy Park on the Lake” will thus become an essential building block for the regional energy transition. The eight project partners differ in project sponsors and project supporters: Project sponsors are Flughafen Friedrichshafen GmbH, Airport, LZ Horizon GmbH & Co. KG and Stadtwerke am See GmbH & Co. KG and project supporters are the city of Friedrichshafen, the municipality of Meckenbeuren, the Bodenseekreis, Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH and Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Possible areas for the photovoltaic systems include parking and roof areas at Lake Constance Airport, open spaces not relevant to operations and flight safety, areas adjacent to the airport site and areas at the Friedrichshafen trade fair. The project is intended to be an important building block for the region's sustainable and CO2-neutral energy supply: independence from other energy sources or from power lines from north to south is to be increased, because large-scale photovoltaic systems can produce large amounts of electricity for use in the region can be obtained without major line losses.
