Apparently unknown people managed to break into the security area of Innsbruck Airport over the weekend without being noticed. The intruders left a smear on the turning plate of runway 08.

The words “Ban Private Jets” were applied in white letters using an as yet unspecified color. At the moment it is not known whether any further damage was caused in addition to this vandalism. It is also noteworthy that the organizations otherwise known for “actions” at commercial airports have not committed themselves to this. The “Last Generation” claims that they had nothing to do with the graffiti at Innsbruck Airport.

In general, people at Innsbruck Airport are cautious when it comes to communication. It is only confirmed that the lettering exists, but it is not yet known how the unknown people were able to get to the area and the runway. This suggests that the intrusion could have occurred at night. There is a ban on night flights at the Tyrolean airport, so there was hardly any danger.

Nevertheless, the incident in Innsbruck shows that there are apparently significant deficiencies in the guarding of the security area. The fact that the intrusion of the unknown people was not even noticed does not reflect well on the situation on site. In any case, the police have started investigations against unknown people. It is currently not known whether there are any surveillance camera recordings that could be helpful in identifying the perpetrators.

“On Sunday, November 19th, a private aerial photo from an Innsbruck-based pilot was sent to the airport. In this aerial photo, the writing “BAN PRIVATE JETS” was blurred at the western end of the runway. An immediate on-site inspection revealed unrecognizable remains of a white dye at the affected end of the runway. During the regular runway inspections with normal vehicles, the lettering could not be identified beforehand because visibility was impaired by the wetness of the runway and the lettering was not even readable from the ground. The airport will report this incident today. In addition, it is currently being evaluated whether the exact incident was recorded on the surveillance cameras. Flight operations were never affected,” said Innsbruck Airport in a statement.
