The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizzair has succeeded in negotiating the 14-day landing ban in Athens issued by the Greek government. The carrier received approval from the Mediterranean state to continue to fly to the capital's airport.
The Greek government accused Wizzair that the QR codes required for entry were inadequately checked at check-in and / or boarding. Without this it is not possible to enter Greece and both the airline and the passenger are faced with a hefty fine. According to the Greek Ministry of Transport, the Hungarian low-cost airline was said to have had a particularly high number of travelers without the aforementioned entry QR code on board. That is why they resorted to the drastic sanction of the 14-day landing ban at Athens Airport.
However, since Wizzair is not an isolated case and repeatedly “switching through” passengers without the barcode, Greece obviously wanted to set an example. In Austria, various airlines repeatedly refused transport because the mandatory QR code was not available. Greece just stipulates that passengers who do not have such an entry code may not be carried.
Wizzair explains in a media broadcast that they have entered into a dialogue with the Greek authorities and that they have been able to provide clarification. At the proverbial “green table”, the 14-day landing ban for Athens was lifted again, so that the Hungarian carrier can continue to operate its flight offer according to the flight schedule. "Wizz Air appreciates the cooperation of the Greek authorities on this matter," said a spokesman.
