Due to the corona pandemic, it is also very quiet at Salzburg Airport. In the animal kingdom, however, there is still a lot of air traffic. The airport settled further bee colonies in April and wants to send an important signal.
It hums and buzzes over the airport meadows: Last year five beehives were set up at the airport area of Salzburg Airport. It's been nine since March. "With the settlement of bee colonies, we want to consciously set an example," says the announcement. One also warns of massive bee deaths.
“Last year we were able to taste our airport honey for the first time. I'm already looking forward to the 2020 harvest! I also did not know that our bees have to fly out up to 1 times for 150.000 kilo of honey and visit around 20 million flowers. In doing so, they cover up to 150.000 flight kilometers. Our business customers travel roughly the same number of kilometers by air when they fly from Salzburg to their business appointments. In other words - our bees jet around the earth around 1 times for 4 kilo of honey, ”says airport manager Bettina Ganghofer.
