Innsbruck Airport will carry out a general renovation of the runway this year. For this purpose, the airport will be closed from September 20 to October 18, 2021. From spring onwards, preparatory work will be carried out during ongoing operations.

The substructure of the runway at Innsbruck Airport dates back to the 1950s and 60s. New, thin layers of asphalt were then applied every 10 to 15 years, but these upper layers of the slope are now in poor condition. A fundamental renovation of the runway and parts of the taxiways has therefore become necessary. In the course of this renovation, the electrical installation in the slope area will also be modernized and the slope lighting will be converted to modern, energy-saving LED technology.

"The general renovation of the runway is an urgently needed infrastructure measure, but of course also an investment in the future," says airport manager Marco Pernetta. The total project volume amounts to approx. EUR 16,8 million. Strabag was commissioned as general contractor to carry out the pure construction and retrofitting work.

Alexander Strasshofer, technical manager at Innsbruck Airport, explains the planned work: “We will remove around 14 centimeters of the current runway structure and reapply 12 centimeters. We are talking about an area of around 140.000 square meters that needs to be re-asphalted. That is roughly the size of 19 soccer fields. "

Refurbishment schedule:

  • In March and April 2021, minor excavation work will take place next to the runway outside of operating hours in night work, during which new shafts will be installed for future runway lighting.
  • From mid-August to mid-September 2021, the construction site will be set up on the north side of the airport site in the Kranebitter Allee area and preparatory work will be carried out for the actual renovation work. For example, a provisional access road is being built from Kranebitter Allee to the airport site at the technical roundabout for the duration of the construction work.
  • On September 20, 2021, the piste will be closed until October 18, 2021. During this time the airport will be closed and flight operations will not be possible. During these four weeks, work is carried out from Monday to Sunday from 06 a.m. to 00 p.m. every day.
  • Flight operations will then resume on Monday, October 19, 2021.
  • The final work after the reopening will include the dismantling of the construction site equipment by mid-November 2021.

Key points of the project:

  • Total project volume: approx. 16,8 million euros
  • Runway closure: 20.09-18.10.2021-XNUMX - XNUMX-XNUMX-XNUMX the airport is closed
  • Reopening: October 19.10.2021, XNUMX
  • Asphalt removal: approx. 17.000 cubic meters (corresponds to around 40.000 tons)
  • Area to be renovated: approx. 140.000 square meters
