With the opening of the new Istanbul Airport, Ataturk Airport was closed to passenger flights. The “old airport” is still open for cargo. Now Turkish Airlines is moving and that is the end of an era.
The cargo department of Turkey's largest airline will use the new Istanbul Airport in the future. Atatürk remained important for the cargo segment even after the opening of the "New Airport", because Turkish Cargo, MNG Airlines and ULS Airlines, for example, remained.
The cargo operation has now also been moved, leaving Atatürk to only be used for private planes, government and ambulance flights. At the new airport, Turkish Cargo has a freight center that covers an area of around 165.000 square meters. The cargo area of the new airport is generally significantly larger than that previously used at Atatürk.
