On the way to CO2 neutrality, Nuremberg Airport is upgrading its vehicle fleet step by step, relying on low-emission drives.
After commercial vehicles with hybrid or electric motors, the airport replaced its fleet of tugs for transporting luggage and freight as well as so-called pushback vehicles for maneuvering aircraft with models with pure electric drive. In addition, commercial diesel is no longer issued at the company filling station, only the synthetic GTL fuel, according to the airport. The airports in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Copenhagen are already using this alternative fuel successfully.
"Sustainable use of natural resources is very important to us, especially as an airport," says Managing Director Michael Hupe. The airport had therefore already set the course for a sustainable energy supply in previous years: For example, hangar roof areas were equipped with solar modules. In addition, the large parking garages and large areas of the terminal were converted to LED lighting, which leads to considerable electricity savings. In addition, the airport has been drawing heat from the wood chip cogeneration plant of a neighboring farm for years. As part of its energy management, Nuremberg Airport is supplied with 100 percent green electricity.
